L1 - In Class (Philosophy of Mind Intro) Flashcards
What are the 5 different kinds of mental states?
- Bodily sensations (pain, itch, etc)
- Sensory experiences (smell, sound, feel, etc)
- Emotions and feelings (delight, remorse, etc)
- Volitional states (willing, deciding, etc)
- Cognitive states (believing, hoping, etc)
What are the 4 different physical states?
- Physical objects (trees, chairs, etc)
- Parts of physical objects (arms, legs, etc)
- Physical features (color, texture, etc)
- Configurations of material (particles, atoms, etc)
What are the 4 potential ways of highlighting the peculiarity of the mental realm?
- Subjective
- Asymmetric Access to the Mental
- Qualia
- No Appearance/Reality distinction for the Mental
What is the subjective peculiarity?
Experiences/feelings are always subjective
What is the asymmetric access to the mental peculiarity?
I know my feelings, but recognize others’ feelings through outer behavior
What is the qualia peculiarity?
Internal feel to mental state, knowing the difference between pain and itch
What is the no appearance/reality distinction for the mental peculiarity?
Can hallucinate desk in front of you, but not pain or nausea
What are the 2 rival positions for mental states?
- Materialism/Physicalism
- Dualism
What are the 2 types of materialism/physicalism?
- Behaviorism
- Brain-State Physicalism
What is behaviorism?
Mental states are behavioral states (e.g. pain is the disposition to wince and groan when faced with tissue damage)
What is brain-state physicalism?
Mental states are brain states (e.g. pain is just a neural state, such as firing C-fibers)
What are the 2 types of dualism?
- Substance Dualism
- Property Dualism
What is substance dualism?
The mind is a non-physical substance
What is property dualism?
Mental states have non-physical properties
Under property dualism, what are the 2 ways the mental could interact with the physical?
- Interactionism
- Epiphenomenalism
