What is the HSE?
Health and Safety Executive
What is the role of the HSE?
Prevent work-related death, injury and ill-health. Provide support to the public and businesses with guidance, statistics and research.
What are the powers of the HSE?
Inspectors can visit site without notice, talk to workers and take pictures
Can issue written / verbal information or advice
Encourages good H&S practices
Impose sanctions including stop and improvement orders
What is the CSCS?
Construction skills certification scheme
What is PPE and what is 5 point PPE?
Personal protective equipment
Hard hat, goggles, gloves, hi vis, steel toed boots
If you’re going to a site by yourself, what should you do?
Inform someone where i’m going and when i expect to leave site
Carry out a pre-assessment of hazards and risks
If the site has been issued a prohibition notice by HSE, what does this mean?
Prohibition notice requires work to stop immediately, activity must not resume until action is taken to remove the risk
What should you do if someone in injured on site?
Identify any potential dangers
Raise alarm for help
Wait until a first aider / paramedic arrives
Comfort and reassure them
What happens if the public in injured caused by works on site?
Must be reported to HSE if they result in an injury
Site management should investigate the cause and take preventative measures
What accident kills the most operatives in construction?
Falls from height
What is asbestos?
Naturally occuring fibrous mineral found in rocks and soils. It is usually used in materials for its insulation and as a fire retardant
What are the different types of asbestos?
Crocidolite (blue) - most lethal
Amosite (brown) - 2nd most deadliest
Chrystolite (white)
- long, curly, used in commercial applications
What would you do if asbestos was found on site?
Stop work immediately
Report to Site Manager, could need to notify HSE
Asbestos to be tested by competent contractor to identify the type

Where is asbestos commonly found in older buildings?
Cement gutters
Corrugated roofs
Floor and ceiling tiles
Lagging
What are the different methods of managing asbestos if found?
Remove

What are the main health hazards if somebody is exposed to asbestos?
Chronic lung disease
Asbestos related lung cancer
Plueral thickening
What are the different colours for fire extinguishers?
Red - water
Blue - dry powder
Cream / white - foam
Black - CO2
Yellow - wet chemical
What is Legionnaires’ disease?
Fatal form of pneumonia caused by legionella bacteria dispersed into the atmosphere
What is the hierarchy from most effective of health and safety risk control?
- Elimination - Removing hazard
- Substitution - Replacing hazard
- Engineering - Isolate hazard
- Administrative - Change way people work
