File management
The process by which the OS keeps track of the physical location of files and folders in the storage, whilst allowing the user to organise and find data using a folder and file structure.
File extension
In Windows, each file name contains three or four letters as file extension after the dot. For example myfile.xls. “xls” is called the ‘file extension’. It indicates what kind of application created it.
Folder
A directory structure allows you to organise the files and folders on your computer in a sensible manner
Recycle bin
In Windows, is a directory (folder) where deleted files or folders are temporarily stored
Backup
to make a copy of the data held on the system in case the original data is lost or damaged.
Shortcut key combination
is a keyboard way of carrying out an action within an application rather than using the mouse / menu system.
Zip
To ‘zip’ a file. This means to compress a data file by using the zip algorithm. Files that have been compressed using zip have the .zip extension.
