L1- Cracknelling Under Pressure Flashcards
What is an extreme environment?
One that is hard to live in due to weather conditions.
polar regions are under high pressure and have a high latitude. What impact does this have on their environment?
It means that there are no clouds and the sun is at a low angle. Therefore it is very cold in polar regions.
Why is it warmer near the equator than the north and South Pole?
This is because the Suns Ray’s have to travel a shorter distance to the equator so it is more intense and therefore hotter.
What does flora and fauna mean?
Flora- plants
Fauna- animals
Define what ingenious adaptation mean?
These are adaptations that plants and animals take that are seen as clever and make them better suited to the environment that they live in.
What is a tundra environment?
A tundra environment is one that is cold, windy and for much of the year is covered in snow. Rainfall is minimal and greenery is rare. An example of this is the Arctic.
Why do plants in tundra environments have shallow root systems?
This is because during spring on the soil near the surface is able to defrost.
What is the difference between an anatomical adaptation and a behavioural adaptation?
Anatomical- Relating to changes of the physical body structure
Behavioural- Relating to changes in the way the animal acts
What percentage of Antartica is covered in ice?
98%
Why do plants grow low to the ground in tundra environments?
This is done so that snow covers it in the winter to help insulate it.
Are trees more populated towards the equator or poles?
The equator as conditions are better.
What is permafrost?
A thick layer of soil that remains below freezing point throughout the year?
Why do polar bears have small ears?
To reduce heat loss.
What is an ecosystem?
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
What are some of the main adaptations the Caribou has made tithe tundra environment?
- Compact
- Stocky body
- Short tail
- Small ears
