L1:Body fluid compartments Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the control of a vital parameter, and is used to describe the relative consistency of the internal environment
Give two examples of internal stimuli
- change in blood glucose levels
- change in pH level
Give three examples of external stimuli
- Exercise
- Physical insults (heat, lack of oxygen)
- Psychological stresses (work stress, death of loved one)
What percentage of body weight is made up of water?
Men,Women
60%, 50%
What percentage of total body water is made up of intracellular fluid?
60%
Na, Ca and Cl ions have a much ___ conc. In the extracellular fluid than the intracellular fluid
Higher
K ions have a much ___ conc. in the extracellular fluid than in the intracellular fluid
Lower
What is asymmetric distribution of ions important for?
5 bullet points
- setting the membrane potential
- generating electrical activity in nerve and muscle
- initiation of muscle contraction
- Providing energy for the uptake of nutrients and expulsion of waste products
- generating intracellular signalling cascades
What effect does a hypertonic solution have on RBCs?
Causes them to shrink
What effect does a hypotonic solution have on RBCs?
Causes swelling, if this becomes too great the cell will lyse
