Pitch
The attribute of a musical tone produced by the number of vibrations generating it. Pitch can be high or low
Natural notes
The white keys on a keyboard or natural notes.
Sharp
Alters The pitch of a note by 1/2 step up
Flat
Alters the pitch of a note 1/2 step down.
Accidentals
The sharp symbol, the natural symbol, any flat symbol.
Half step
The shortest distance between two notes.
Whole step
The distance of pitch equal to 1/2 steps. Example- the distance between F&G
Enharmonic equivalence
When to notes have the same pitch or tone, but different names. For example C-sharp and D-flat
Clefs
Character set at the head of the staff to indicate the pitch or position of the notes
Treble clef
A symbol used to notate pitches that are to be played on a higher pitch instrument or with the right hand on a keyboard.
Bass clef
A symbol used to notate pitches that are to be played on lower pitched instruments or with the left hand on a keyboard. Also known as the F cleft
Notes on a trouble clef
Lines are E, G, B, D, F
Spaces are F, A, C, E
Notes on the bass clef
Lines are G, B, D, F, A
Spaces – A, C, E, G
Ledger lines
Used to show notes that go higher or lower than the five lines of the staff.
Octave
Is the distance between two notes with the same letter name.
Grand staff
In sheet music, the keyboard uses both treble and bass clef’s that are joined together
Middle C
Middle C is the first ledger line below the treble cleft and the first ledger line above the bass clef. On a piano it is near the middle of the keyboard.
