L1 Flashcards
What are the two branches of the nervous system?
Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
What are the two branches of the pns
Automatic and somatic
What is the role of automatic nervous system?
Regulates involuntary actions
What is the role of the somatic nervous system?
Regulates voluntary actions
What are the two branches of the automatic nervous system and what are there roles
Sympathetic-arousing and parasympathetic-calming
What are the two branches of the somatic nervous system?
Sensory input and motor output
What is the cns?
Brain and spinal chord-in charge of mechanical and chemical actions
What is the pns?
Everything except the brain and spinal chord. It relays information between the cns and other parts of the body
Neutron
Functional unit of the nervous system
Dendrites
Receive chemical signals from the environment or other neurons
Axon
Carries electrical impulses away from the cell body
Myelin sheath
Acts as insulation for the neuron
Schwann cell
Produce myelin sheath
Nodes of raniver
Gaps between the myelin sheath
Neurilemma
Promotes regeneration of damaged axons-not all nerve cells with myelin sheath have this
