L09 - Pituitary Flashcards
Which hormones are produced in the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland?
- ACTH
- TSH
- FSH/ LH
- GH
- Prolcatin
Which hormones are produced in the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland?
- ADH (vasopressin)
2. Oxytocin
Which hormone produced in the hypothalamus stimulates the production/ secretion of GH?
GHRH
- Growth hormone releasing hormone
Which hormone produced in the hypothalamus inhibits the production/ secretion of GH?
Somatostatin
Which hormone produced in the hypothalamus stimulates the production/ secretion of FSH/ LH?
GnRH
- Gonadotropin releasing hormone
Which hormone produced in the hypothalamus stimulates the production/ secretion of ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone)?
CRH
- Corticotropin releasing hormone
Which hormone produced in the hypothalamus stimulates the production/ secretion of TSH?
TRH
- Thyrotropin releasing hormone
Which hormone produced in the hypothalamus inhibits the production/ secretion of prolactin?
Dopamine
What is GH stimulated/ suppressed by?
- Released throughout life
- Pulsatile
Stimulated by: - Hypoglycaemia
- Exercise
- Sleep (peaks higher during sleep)
Suppressed by: - Hyperglycaemia
Describe the positive feedback of GH
- Hypothalamus secretes GHRH after stimulation from circadian rhythm, stress or cortisol fasting
- GHRH stimulates prod and secretion of GH in the anterior pituitary
- GH stimulates the liver and other tissues to release insulin-like growth factors
- These insulin like growth factors stimulate cartilage growth, inc blood glc and bone/ tissue growth
What does GH stimulate?
- Protein synthesis
- Lipolysis
- Glc metabolism
