Q

Data Semantics

A

“Semantic data is the information that allows machines to understand the meaning of information. It describes the technologies and methods that convey the meaning of the information.” (Sir Tim Berners-Lee)

Digital Assistants (DA) like Siri, Alexa, OK Google and others completely depend on the semantics of the underlying data sets to provide meaningful data.

Entity Relationship Model (ERM)

A

A entity relationship model basically looks like a mind map where the different entity are linked together. The “arrows” convey the action which is made between two entities like with C-Map Tools.

A special form of the ERM is the ERP Sales Order.

A

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): A service that provides access to technical infrastructure (e.g. compute, storage, network components and other IT resources)

Platform as a Service (PaaS): These are platform-based service allowing to develop, run and manage applications. The underlying infrastructure is part of the service and is managed by the platform provider. (IaaS + PaaS)

Software as a Service (SaaS): This a ready to use service that is provided via the internet. The customer accesses the software via a web browser or API based on a subscription model. (IaaS + PaaS + SaaS)

On Premises have everything at your company while IaaS, PaaS and SaaS are partly managed by others. SaaS completely and then it is nearly straight line down to on-premises (Slide 18).

Q

ERP on Premises vs ERP Cloud

A

On Premises:
• Maximum Control: The control of the system and application is completely in the hands of the owner
• Unlimited Access: You can access the data and services without the internet access
• Security: All data are stored within the company and are not handed over to someone else (access of the data is restricted by the owner)

Cloud:
• Flexibility in Functions: I can activate and deactivate services and functions based on my current demands
• Flexibility in Location: I can use systems all over the world. The provider is taking care to sync data across time zones
• Flexibility to Compute: I can increase and decrease the amount of computational resources I need for specific processes or points in time
• Backup and Data Loss: The data are regularly backed up and stored across different systems.
