L01: what is a tumour? Flashcards
How do mutations arise?
copying errors during replication
spontaneous depurination
exposure to carcinogens
What is a carcinoma?
Cancer arising from epihtelial cells
What is a sarcoma?
Cancer arising from mesenchymal/connective tissue
What is an adenocarcinoma?
Cancer arising from glandular tissue (malignant)
What is an adenoma?
BENIGN tumour in glandular tissue
Are tumours monoclonal?
Yes - they initially arise from single cell but can become heterogenous as other cell types get involved
Gate-keeper vs driver mutations
Gate-keeper: mutation that causes cancer to ARISE (different depending on cancer)
Driver: mutations allowing tumour progression & malignancy
What defines a malignant tumour?
When it breaks free of the basement membrane
What are the 6 hallmarks of cancer?
Self sufficiency in growth signals Insensitivity to anti-growth signals Evasion of apoptosis Limitless replicative potential Sustained angiogenesis Tissue invasion + metastasis
