L’Oscillation Flashcards
Define Simple harmonic motion
Motion of particle abt fixed pt such that its accelerat n is proportional to its displacement from the fixed pt, and directed towards the pt/opp. in direct n to displacement
What are the types of damping
- Light
- Critical
- Heavy
What is resonance? What happens?
When driving f is equal to natural f of oscillat n of system, amplitude of oscillat n reach maximum
Max transfer of energy per unit time from driver to oscillating system, giving a max amplitude of vibration
What is meant by damping?
Dissipation of energy of oscillator bcos of resistive forces
What is natural frequency?
f at which oscillator oscillates when oscillating freely in absence of external driving force
What is critical damping?
A system is critically damped if it returns to eqm pos n w/o oscillat n in minimum time
When is damping unfavourable?
Damping of pendulum bob’s oscillation
How to alter degree of damping?
- Change viscosity of liquid (eg for submerged pendulum bobs)
- Change size/shape of pendulum bobs
