L’imparfait – The Imperfect Tense
“The Imperfect Tense”
L’imparfait est l’un des deux principaux temps du passé.
“The imperfect is one of the two main past tenses.”
C’est un temps descriptif.
“It is a descriptive tense.”
Il est utilisé pour :
“It is used to:”
Décrire une personne / un lieu ou la météo dans le passé.
“Describe a person/place or the weather in the past.”
Décrire quelque chose que vous faisiez beaucoup dans le passé (action continue),
“Describe something you used to do a lot in the past (continuous action)
Décrire comment vous vous sentiez (émotions) dans le passé. J’étais triste/heureux.
“Describe how you were feeling (emotions) in the past. I was sad/happy.”
Décrire ce que vous faisiez ou ce qui se passait quand quelque chose d’autre est arrivé.
“Describe what you were doing or what was going on when something else happened.”
Par exemple, je faisais mes devoirs quand ………..

C’est un temps très facile à former.
“It is a very easy tense to formulate.”
- Prenez la forme de nous du verbe au présent.
“1. Take the nous form of the verb in the present tense.”
- Supprimez le ‘ons’
“2. Drop the ‘ons’”
- Ajoutez les terminaisons du l’imparfait – ais, ais, ait, ait, ions, iez, aient.
“3. Add the imperfect tense endings – ais
Nous formons le l’imparfait de cette manière avec UNE EXCEPTION – LE VERBE ÊTRE.
“Every verb forms the imperfect tense this way WITH ONE EXCEPTION – THE VERB ÊTRE.”
