l Flashcards
What is a biome?
Large geographic regions with distinct climate, flora, and fauna.
What is cellular respiration?
Process by which cells break down glucose to release energy.
What is an ecosystem?
A biological community of interacting organisms (both biotic and abiotic factors) in a specific area.
What is a biotic factor?
Living components of an ecosystem.
What is an abiotic factor?
Non-living components of an ecosystem.
What is symbiosis?
Close and long-term interaction between different species.
What is competition in an ecosystem?
Interaction between organisms competing for limited resources.
What is an example of a biome?
Examples: rainforest, desert, tundra, grassland, etc.
What is an example of an ecosystem?
Examples: forests, coral reefs, ponds, and even urban environments.
What is an example of a symbiotic relationship?
Examples: mutualism (both species benefit), commensalism (one benefits, the other is unaffected), parasitism (one benefits, the other is harmed).
What is carrying capacity?
The maximum number of individuals of a species that an ecosystem can support sustainably.
What is equilibrium?
Refers to a state of balance or stability in an ecosystem.
What is immigration?
Refers to the movement of individuals into a population or ecosystem from another area.
What is emigration?
Refers to the movement of individuals out of a population or ecosystem to another area.
What is biodiversity in an ecosystem?
Variety of different species in an ecosystem or on Earth.
What are keystone species?
Plays a critical role in maintaining the structure and functioning of an ecosystem.
What are invasive species
Non-native species that are introduced to a new ecosystem and have a negative impact on the native species and their habitats.
What are umbrella species?
Species selected for conservation efforts that indirectly protect a wide range of other species and their habitats.
What are foundation species?
Species that have a significant impact on shaping and structuring their ecosystems.
