KS5 Tests for Ions Flashcards
Tests and results for positive and negative ions
Ammonium ions(NH4+)
warm with sodium hydroxide solution
the gas produced turns damp litmus paper blue
Magnesium ions ( Mg2+)
Add sodium hydroxide solution, white precipitate. Precipitate does not dissolve in excess NaOH.
Calcium ions (Ca2+)
flame test orange- red flame
Barium ions (Ba2+)
flame test green flame
Strontium (Sr2+)
flame test red flame
Aluminium (Al3+)
Add sodium hydroxide solution, white precipitate. Precipitate dissolves in excess NaOH(aq).
Chloride (Cl-)
Add few drops of nitric acid and silver nitrate solution, white precipitate which dissolves in dilute aqueous ammonia.
Bromide (Br-)
Add few drops of nitric acid and silver nitrate solution, cream precipitate which dissolves in concentrated aqueous ammonia.
Iodide (I-)
Add few drops of nitric acid and silver nitrate solution, yellow precipitate which is insoluble in concentrated aqueous ammonia.
Sulfate (SO42-)
Add few drops of hydrochloric acid and barium chloride solution, white precipitate.
Hydroxide (OH-)
warm with solid ammonium salt, the gas produced turns litmus paper blue.
Carbonate (CO32-)
add dilute hydrochloric acid, test the gas produced with limewater. Bubbles , the gas turns limewater milky.
