1
Q

Why, when and how did France fall so quickly?

(There are multiple answers to this) -use ur brain to see the reasons why france died

A

France got invaded on 12 May 1940, surrendered on the 22 June 1940,

Lost 40% of their army, and lost 80% of their equipment

  1. France fell quickly due to the French politics being on the Left-wing side, choosing loyalty over competence.
  2. France did not modernise their army, they had stuck with sending messages via motorbikes instead of radio
  3. French stuck with WW1 doctrine which was to have all strong units along the frontline instead of putting stronger units in weaker spots
  4. France neglected the Ardnesses, which was left undefended due to the French believing that it was impossible for German armoured spearheads to penetrate a thick forest.
  5. Reversal of the Schlieffen plan.
  6. French and BEF got slowed down by 8 million refugees
  7. Germans built pontoon bridges, making destroying bridges ineffective.

Q

What is Blitzkrieg and how did it work?

A

Blitzkrieg was an effective multi-effort of Infantry, artillery, armoured divisions, aircraft and motorised infantry to overwhelm the enemy, provoking shock and chaos. Surprise. Speed. Superiority by firepower.

How Blitzkrieg worked:

  1. Intel the enemy, bridges, key locations
  2. Agents sent to scout the landscape
  3. Invade
  4. Military police is sent to deal with the refugees so they do not slow down military progress
  5. Mass use of tanks, Airforce (usually deployed first) is sent to bomb the enemy
  6. Infantry and artillery follow the tanks
  7. Terror bombing
