Q

Particles are…

A
  • very small
  • Have spaces between them and distance varies in solid, liquid and gases
  • Move about at different speeds in solids, liquids and gases

Q

What is the Kinetic Particle Theory?

A

The kinetic particle theory states that matter is made up of tiny particles and that these particles are in constant random motion
- As the particles are moving, they possess kinetic energy
- It is used to describe states of matter, explain the diff in properties of solids, liquids and gases and the change in state of matter and diffusion.

Q

What is the arrangement of particles for solids, liquids and gases?

A

Solid: Closely packed in a regular & orderly arrangement

Liquid: Less closely packed than in solid in a disorderly arrangement

Q

What is the movement of particles for solids, liquids and gases?

A

Solid: Vibrate and rotate about their fixed position

Liquid: Slide over neighbouring particles and move freely throughout the liquid

Gas: Move freely in all directions at high speeds

Q

What is the volume for solids and liquids? Explain why.

A

Solid: Fixed as the particles are very close to one another.

Liquid: Fixed.he particles of a liquid are further away from each other than particles of a solid. However, liquid particles are still packed closely together. Thus, a liquid cannot be compressed.

Q

What is the shape for solids, liquids and gases? Explain why.

A

Solid: Fixed shape. Particles are in a fixed position and a regular pattern. The strong attractive force prevents the particles from breaking away from their fixed positions.

Liquid: No fixed shape. Takes on the shape of the container it is in. Particles of a liquid are quite close though slightly further apart than in solid and are arranged in a disorderly manner. They have weaker FOA than the particles in a solid and have more KE than particles of the same substance in solid state and are not held in fixed positions. They slide over each other and can move freely throughout the liquid

Gas: No fixed shape. Takes on the shape of the container it is in
