KPT Flashcards
Characteristics of solid
Arrangement of particles: Packed closely in orderly arrangement
Movement of particles: Vibrate about in fixed positions
Due to particles held in fixed positions by strong forces of attraction
Characteristics of a liquid
Arrangement of particles: Packed fairly closed together in an disorderly arrangement
Movement of particles: Able to slide past each other throughout the liquid
Due to particles held by strong forces of attraction
Characteristics of a gas
Arrangement of particles: Spaced very far apart, randomly arranged
Movement of particles: Able to move randomly and freely in all directions at great speeds
Due to weak intermolecular forces of attraction between particles
Define diffusion
Diffusion is the process in which a substance moves from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration due to the constant and random motions of its particles
What are the 2 factors affecting rate of diffusion
- Temp
- Speed of diffusion increases with temp because particles gain energy at higher temp so they move faster, higher the temp, faster rate of diffusion - Relative molecular mass of particles
- Larger the relative molecular mass, the slower the rate of diffusion
- Smaller the relative molecular mass, the faster the rate of diffusion
Boiling VS Evaporation
Boiling:
- Happens at a fixed temperature, only at mp
- Takes place throughout the liquid
- Rapid process
- Requires continuous supply of heat
Evaporation:
- Takes place at any temp between mp & bp
- Takes place only at surface
- Slower process
- Results in liquid becoming cooler due to loss of high energy particles
