What is P’ungmul?
A Korean folk music tradition that includes drumming, dancing, and singing. Became prominent in the Joseon dynasty (1392-1896).
What is a Changgo? (also known as a Janggu)
A Korean membranophone. The most representative drum in traditional Korean music.
What is a Puk? (also known as Buk)
A Korean membranophone. A double-headed barrel drum. Used for both Korean court music and folk music.
What is a Ching? (also known as a Jing)
A Korean idiophone. A gong, used in the past as a military signaling instrument, and now used in an ensemble for Korean court music.
What is a Soe? (also called a Kkwaenggwari)
A small Korean idiophone. A brass, handheld gong used primarily in Korean folk music.
What is Samul nori?
A genre of Korean percussion music. Played with four traditional Korean instruments: the Changgo, Puk, Ching, and Soe. Samul means four.
What is a Gayageum?
A plucked Korean, 12-string chordophone. Related to the Chinese Guzheng and Japanese Koto.
