Kohlberg’s inspiration
Kohlberg was inspired by the work of Piaget and his theory of moral development in children. He placed a structural approach to on moral development, suggesting that an individual’s morality stems from a social- cognitive approach and a social emotional approach.
Piaget’s belief about children’s morality aged 10 and under when he believes morality is fully developed.
Piaget believed that children younger than 10 are focused on authority rather than evaluating their actions based off of their own morals but that around this age that children develop a moral compass.

Pre-Conventional
Aged 4-10, focused on self interests.
Conventional
More focused on society as a while, based on rules and approval from others.
Post-Convential
Based on respect for democraricallt agreed rules but also personal conscience
Punishment and Obedience orientation
Whatever leads to punishment is wrong, if you avoid punishment then this is good
Instrumentation relativist
The right way to behave is the way that is rewarded
Good boy- Good girl orientation
The right way to behave is to be seen as a good person by others; for approval from other people.
Study Aim
To investigate development in moral reasoning throughout adolescence and early adulthood.
- A secondary aim was to access the extent to which these changes hols true in a range of cultural contexts.
Research Method
Longitudinal study, following the moral development of the same group if boys for 12 years.
Sample
75 American boys aged 10-16, at that start of the study. They were followed at three years intervals through to ages 22-28.
Moral development was also studied in boys from Great Britain, Canada, Taiwan, Mexico and Turkey.
