knowledge organizer revision 19-27 drag and friction Flashcards
what 3 things can force do
- change an objects speed
- change an objects direction
- change an objects shape/size
what is drag
- friction
- air resistance
- water resistance
where does the energy go when friction acts on a body
energy is lost to the surroundings as heat
how can we reduce friction
use lubrication or ball bearings
what does friction depend on
the weight of the object , the roughness of the surfaces and connecting surface area
what is streamlining
where we decrease the surface of a body to reduce drag forces
what is extension of a spring
the difference between its natural length and the extended length
what is hookes law
describes how springs etc extend when a force is applied
what is the spring constant
measured in N/m describes how much a spring extends or compresses. a higher value means it will extend less under force
