Define ‘leisure tourists’. What do they enjoy doing? What are the benefits sought by leisure tourists?
Leisure tourists are tourists who travel for pleasure, rest and relaxation. They enjoy visiting popular tourist attractions and shopping.
Define ‘business tourists’. Why do they travel? What are the benefits sought by business tourists?
Business tourists travel because of their jobs and usually have a fixed timeline for their travel. They have limited time to spend on leisure activities during their travel.
Define ‘stopover holiday tourists’. Why do they have stopovers? What are the benefits sought by stopover holiday tourists?
Stopover holiday tourists stop in a particular country to break a long flight. They usually stay for a very short period of one or two nights.
Why is Singapore a very popular stopover for tourists travelling from Europe to Australia?
This is because such tourists want to break their long flights of up to 23 hours.
Define ‘medical tourists’. Why do they travel? What may such tourists do on the same trip?
Medical tourists travel to another country for medical treatment. They may pack in a holiday on the same trip.
Why would a person go to another country for medical treatment?
- The medical fees in other countries may be lower than those in their own country.
For example, some Singaporeans like to travel to Bangkok, Thailand, for a five-day holiday which includes a medical check-up, medical tests and minor surgery. On completion of the medical treatment which usually takes three days, they remain in Bangkok for another two days for sightseeing and shopping. - The standard of medical expertise and facilities in other countries may be better than those offered in their own country. However, the medical fees could be more expensive (i.e. this is a disadvantage to such medical tourists).
Define ‘mature tourists’. Why do they travel?
Mature tourists travel for rest and relaxation. They may visit relatives or historical and cultural sites. They are elderly tourists with the time, money and energy to travel.
Define ‘special interest tourists’. Give some examples of special interest tourists.
Special interest tourists travel to indulge in their favourite pastimes or interests. Examples include sport tourists and ecotourists.
Why are tourists classified into different groups / according to their characteristics?
So that businesses in the travel and tourism industry can better understand the needs and wants of each group. They can then put different packages together that will appeal to their different target groups of customers.
What should a business that chooses to serve a few customer groups do?
It may vary its products to serve these different groups of customers based on their needs and wants. For example, in addition to its regular menu, a family restaurant will usually have kids’ menu that offers smaller portions for children. The food is also presented in a way that appeals to children.
