knee Flashcards
Femur
Thighbone, longest and strongest
Fibula
lateral bone in lower leg between knee and ankle, smaller than Tibia and parallel to it
Tibia
Larger bone in lower leg, parallel to Fibula, connects knee to ankle
Patella
kneecap
Sesamoid
The kneecap is a sesamoid bone, think sesame seed (a small bone commonly found embedded within a muscle or tendon near joint surfaces)
MCL
Medial collateral ligament, helps stabalize medial side of knee, MOI is direct blow to outside of the knee
LCL
Lateral collateral ligament, helps stabalize the lateral aspect of the knee, stabalizes the femur and fibula, MOI is blow to inside of the knee
ACL
Anterior cruciate ligament, stabilizes tibia and femur, stops tibia from moving forward against femur, moi is cut and plant movement
PCL
Posterior cruciate ligament, stabilizes femur and tibia, keeps tibia from moving backwards, MOI is Hyperextension.
Quadricep muscles
Front of the thigh, above knee and below hip, one of the knee tendons
Hamstring Muscles
Posterior compartment of the thigh, helps with bending the knee
Subluxation
Partial dislocation, moves past the normal location of where the bone is supposed to be but not completely out of place
Dislocation
Bone popping completely out of where it is supposed to be. Separation of two bones where they meet at a joint
Dashboard injury
knee injury that is usually caused by a traumatic or impactful incident, typically car crashes, think knee crashing into the dashboard.
Meniscus
C shaped cushion between tibia and femur, a tear is a forceful twist or rotation of the knee.
