KL 23: Non-experimental research Flashcards
What is Nonexperimental research?
systematic empirical inquiry in which the scientist does not have direct control of independent variables because their manifestations have already occurred or because they are inherently not manipulable
Most important difference between experimental and non-experimental research?
Control.
Self-selection
occurs when members of the groups being studied are in groups, in part, because they possess traits or characteristics extraneous to the research problem. Self selection can occur into samples, or into comparison groups (smokers vs. non-smokers).
Why is non-experimental research important?
many research problems do not lend themselves to experimental research. It should not be assumed that experiments are “better” than non-exp. research. Some non-exp. studies have been highly influential, including studies of lung cancer on smokers vs. non-smokers. However, replication of these studies is critical.
