What is a stye??
Blockage of:
Glands of moll - sweat
Glands of zeis - sebum
These open directly onto lash follicle and get blocked = stye
What are the internal glands of the eye?
meibomian glands
What is the treatment of a stye or blepharitis?
not infected:
- hot compress (open up pore)
- baby shampoo wash
Infected:
-add fusidic acid (antibioticc drops)
What is a pinguecula?
- degenerative vascular yellow grade nodule on the conjunctiva either side of iris (scarring) caused by increased sun exposure
- can get inflamed
- can give steroids
- v. rarely can invade cornea - need surgery
What is an entropion?
inturning of lashes
What is an ectropion?
outturning of lashes
- assoc. with facial palsy and increasing age
- dry eyes causing watery eyes
what is Lagophthalmus
Lagophthalmos is defined as the inability to close the eyelids completely. Blinking covers the eye with a thin layer of tear fluid, thereby promoting a moist environment necessary for the cells of the exterior part of the eye.
- lubricate eyes
- tape eyes shut
Side effect acyclovir
-hepatitis and renal failure
What is acute dacrocystitis
inflammation of lacrimal duct
- if baby give lacrimal duct massage
- if acute due to cellulitis - abiotic
- if chronic - lacrimal sac distends/discharges into eye and duct may become dilated and blocked
- if permenently blocked dactocytorhinostomy - rencanalation of duct
dacroadenitis - what is this?
inflammation of lacrimal gland
- viral/bacterial:
- measle mumps influenzae
- pain and swelling

What is dry eye syndrome?
keratoconjunctivitis sicca
- excess evaporation of tears
- inadequate production of tears
