What are social aggregates?
People that happen to be together in a particular place, but do not significantly interact or identify with one another
ex. watching cinema, people at a concert

People who share common characteristics but do not necessarily interact or identify with one another
ex. gender, LGBTQIA+
What is a social group?
People who regularly interact with one another on the basis of shared expectations concerning behaviour and who share a sense of common identity
ex. family, political parties, class groups
What are the types of social groups?
- primary group
- secondary group
- reference group
What is a primary group?
First person you interact with, typically small social group whose members share close, personal relationships
ex. families, childhood friends
What is a secondary group?
Can be small or large, mostly impersonal and usually short-term
ex. political parties, schoolmates, doctor-patient

Group we compare ourselves with, “identity association group”
ex. parents, siblings, teachers, peers

It is formed by the presence of social linkage invoked and availed by an individual for some personal, economic, religious, or political reasons
