What is Kinship?
The Social Structure Or Aboriginal social organisation and family relationships.
What does it determine?
Determines how people relate to each other, roles and responsibilities and obligations (on another, ceremonial and land).
What is sacred law (Lore)
- Sacred laws passed down through generations.
- Determine specifically who you can marry, how to raise children, roles and responsibilities within the tribe.
- 3 levels of kinship; Moiety, Totem and Skin Names.

what is Moiety?
Meaning ‘half.’ Moiety is a system where everything, including people and the environment, are split in half.
how is moiety determined by?
it is through their matrilineal or patrilineal side of their family?
People who share the same Moiety are considered siblings, and as a result they are?
- Forbidden to marry one another.
- And Have reciprocal responsibilities to support others.
What is a Totem?
is a natural object, plant or animal that is inherited by members of a Clan or family as their spiritual emblem, and every tribe has one.
What are totems believed to be decent from?
Believed to be the descendant of the Dreamtime.
- Totems unites the tribe and helps keep the connection to the Dreaming.
Indigenous Australian believe the totem ‘dreams’ and individuals into a woman’s womb.
Thus, creates a transcendent bound between the individual and their totem

What are skin names?
Skin Name indicates a person’s blood line, as well as, how generations are linked and how they should interact.
Do family members share a skin name?
No Husbands and wives do not share the same skin name, and children don’t share their parent’s name.
- Skin names are given based on the
preceding name and its level in the naming
cycle.
