Allegiance
Loyalty to ones country
Colony
A country, or area, under control of another country, typically a distant one. The area is occupied by settlers from the “mother” county.
British
Citizens of the United Kingdom, sometimes called Great Britain, which (at the time of the American Colonies) includes England, Wales, and Scotland ( and currently includes Northern England)
Boycott
The refusal to buy certain goods as a way to protest. Boycotts and other protests are organized ways to publicly express a strong disagreement with a government or company policy or action.
Empire
An a extensive group of states or countries under a single rule or government.
Parliament
The official government body of Great Britain made up of the House of Lords and the House of Commons
Sons of liberty
A secret group of radicals formed by Sam Adams to protest the Stamp Act. They used violence such as tarring and feathering to punish loyalists and to protest British policies.
Treason
The crime of betraying your country especially to kill the ruler or over through the government. A person who commitments treason is considered a traitor.
Tyranny
I overly controlling and unfair government ruled by a tyrant, or absolute ruler whose power is not limited British Government was a tyranny
Patriot
An American during the war who supported the cause of the revolution. Only about one third of the Americans were patriots,sometimes these people were called wigs.
Taverns
An inn or meeting place that offered lodging and sold food and drink for both travelers and regular customers in the Colonial area. Many political discussions and plans were debated at taverns
Red coats
A slang term for British soldiers who wore scarlet red uniform jackets
Tax
Money that is paid by the people to run the country
Indentured servant
A person who in exchange for free passage to American Colonies, worked for a master for a period of four to seven years. Many Americans came to the Colonies as indentured servants.
Loyalist
An American that did not support the revolution agents Great Britain and was loyal to King Gorge III. One third of the colonists were loyalists.
Quartering
The a t of providing living and sleeping arrangements for a group of people especially for military troops
Repeal
The act of ending or cancelling a law or congressional act.
Noble man/Gentleman
A man belonging to a high social or political class usually wealthy. This status was passed down through generations of families and it was not normally acceptable for noble men to befriend or marry below there rank.
Liberty
To be free of government interference. To the Patriots liberty was freedom from being controlled by Great Britain.
