kingdom fungi Flashcards
Characteristics of fungi
multi-cellular or unicellular
Eukaryotes
Heterotrophs – decomposers in ecosystem
structure of a fungus
mycelium (branching structure) typically found underground
The reproductive structure (fruiting body) is the visible part of the fungus (above ground)
reproduction (sexual and asexual)
Asexual
Hyphae break off (fragmentation)
Spores are released
Parent cell grows new cell which eventually pinches off (budding)
Sexual
Hyphae can have 2 sexes (+ and -)
They fuse together and form a zygospore
The zygospore then release spores
examples
mushrooms
importance of fungi
They are decomposers
Consist of yeast – used to make bread, wine and beer
So, why are fungi not plants?
They do not produce their own food
(no chloroplast)
Fungi don’t have leaves and roots
nutrition and how they obtain food
they absorb nutrients from the environment around them
human uses
food preparation and human antibiotics
morphology
Have a cell wall made up of chitin
Plant cell walls are made up of cellulose.
Another reason why fungi are not plants
