Kingdom Animalia: General Characteristics Flashcards
What are the general characteristics of organisms in kingdom animalia
Heterotrophic, Multicellular, No cell walls, Skeletal structure
What is the difference between an open and closed circulatory system?
In a closed circulatory system, blood is contained in blood vessels. In an open circulatory system, blood flows around the body cavities uncontained.
How do endothermic animals maintain their body temperature?
Endothermic animals maintain their own body temperatures through metabolic functions and body coverings. They also have involuntary mechanisms like panting, shivering, and sweating.
How do ectothermic animals maintain their body temperature?
They live in habitats where conditions are fairly stable. They also use behavioral strategies.
What kind of symmetry comes from different germ layers?
One germ layer: asymmetrical.
Two germ layers: radial symmetry.
Three germ layers: bilateral symmetry.
Three chambered heart
2 atria
1 ventricle
Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mix in the ventricle
Three chambered septated heart
Similar to the three chambered heart, but oxygenated and deoxygenated blood don’t mix as much.
Four chambered heart
2 atria
2 ventricle
Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are separate.
Complete metamorphosis
Egg
Larva
Chrysalis/Pupa

Incomplete metamorphosis

Types of respiration
Lungs (reptiles, mammals, birds) Air sacs (birds) Amoebocytes (sponges) Gas exchange through skin (segmented worms and amphibians) Diffusion (cnidarians)
