Kinetics - Factors affecting rate of rxn Flashcards
Concentration
According to the collision theory, as concentration increases, the number of particles in a given volume increases.
Number of collisions per unit time increases and frequency of effective collisions
Temperature
Use Maxwell-Boltzman curve.
As temp increases from T1 to T2, the number of reactant particles with energy more than or equal to the activation energy, Ea, increases.
This increases the frequency of effective collisions and hence an increase in the rate of reaction.
Light
-
Surface area, particle size
SA to VR increase, increasing freq of effective collisions, increase rate of rxn
Catalyst
Use Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution.
In the presence of a catalyst, activation energy of reaction is lowered (Ea. to Ea’), hence number of reactant particles equal to or more than the activation energy increases
Frequency of effective collisions increases leading to a faster reaction.
