Kinetics,Equilibria and Redox Reactions and collision theory Flashcards
What are a range of factors affecting the rate of chemical reactions?
1)Surface Area
2)Temperature
3)concentration and pressure
How do you calculate the rate of reaction?
rate of reaction=amount of reactants or product/time
What are some of the other ways to measure the rate of reaction?
1)Use a colorimeter to measure the appearance of a colored product or disappearance of a colored reactant.
2)Measure the loss of mass in a reactant that produces a gas.
3)Measure the time taken for enough precipitate to form so that a cross drawn under the flask is no longer visible.
4)The iodine clock reaction
What is activation energy?
the minimum amount of energy required to start a reaction.
What is an Exothermic reaction?
reactions that give out heat.
What is an endothermic reaction?
Reactions that take in heat.
What are some of the advantages of using a catalyst in industrial reactions?
-Using catalysts leads to faster, more energy-efficient chemical reactions.
-Catalysts are used to increase the rate of reactions so minimizing the size and cost of a plant.
What is the Maxwell Boltzmann distribution?
A maxwell boltzmann distribution of molecular energies is a plot of the number of gas molecules against their energy.
