Kinetics And Rate Equations Flashcards
What is the definition of activation energy
The minimum amount of energy required for a reaction to occur
How do you work out the rate of reaction
Change in conc/ time
What does increasing the concentration do ?
-Increase the number of reactant particles in a given volume
-so increase the frequency of collisions between particles
-therefore more successful collisions in a given time
Why is the concentration of reagents higher at the start of a reaction than the end
Because the reagents are used up in a reaction so concentration decreases as each one is used up
When temperature increases what happens to the maxwell boltman curve
It shifts to the right and the emp lowers
If temp decreases what happens to maxwell boltman curve
It shifts to the left and the emp peak is higher
What is a catalyst
Is a substance that increases the rate of reaction but itself is unchanged at the end of the reaction
How does a catalyst work
It works by providing an alternative route which has a lower activation energy
Define rate of reaction
The change in conc of a substance in a given time
What is le chatiliers principle of
The position of equilibrium shifts to oppose the change
Define dynamic equilibrium
When the forward reaction is equal to the backward reaction and the conc of products and reacts remain constant
what are the four conditions that affect rate
-concentration
-temperature
-pressure
-surface area
what are the units of K
moldm-3s-1
equation for factor change in rate
(factor change in [A])^a x (factor change in [B])^b
where a and b are the orders w.r.t each reactant
whats a rate equation
rate=k [A]^a[B]^b
if its zero rder then it wont appear in the equation
if its 1st order then it will be in te equation but with no power
and if its 2nd order it will be in the equation but will be to the power of 2
