Kinetics Flashcards
What is thermodynamics?
Study of feasibility and start and finish of chemical reactions. E.g. “how far will the reaction go”
What is kinetics?
The study of the speed of chemical reactions. E.g. “how fast does the reaction go”.
The order of a reaction with respect to any one reactant is?
The power to which the concentration of that reactant is raised in the rate equation.
Does order affect the stoichiometry of the reaction?
No, it has NOTHING to do with it.
Zero order?
- If [A] has no effect on initial rate.
- Rate is independent of [A]
- Rate = k[A]°
- Reaction is 0th order with respect to A.
First order?
- if [A] doubles, initial rate doubles
- rate is proportional to [A]
- rate = k [A]^1
- reaction is 1st order with respect to A
Second order?
- If initial rate increases 4x when [A] doubles
- rate is proportional to [A]^2
- reaction is 2nd order with respect to A
Third order reaction?
- If initial rate increases 8x when [A] doubles.
- rate is proportional to [A]^3
- rate = k [A]^3
- reaction is 3rd order with respect to A.
The overall order of a reaction is?
The sum of the powers to which the concentrations of the reactants are raised in the rate equation.
What is the units for 1st order?
S-1
What is the units for 2nd order?
Mol-1 l s-1
3rd order
Mol-2 l2 s-1
The rate of reaction is dependent on the slowest step, which is called the…
Rate determining step.
What is meant by the order of a reaction?
The number of moles in the rate determining step.
