Kinetics Flashcards
What is a rate ?
a measure of change
the speed at which a chemical reaction proceeds
What is exponential growth ?
Exponential growth is a pattern of data that shows greater increases with passing time, creating the curve of an exponential function.
How to Quantify an increasing rate ?
exponential growth;a geometric progression
How to measure the rate of biochemical reaction ?
measure chemical concentration
measuring the disappearance of a reactant or the appearance of a product over time
We plot the result :
Over time what happens to the reaction rate ?
decreases over time
because reactants are running out-conc is decreasing over time
RR linked to conc of reacting species
The rate law ?
is an equation which precisely states the link between the reaction rate and the concentration of the reactants
it describe the shape of our concentrations
What is linear growth ?
arithmetic progression
constant difference
constant rate
rate = k
zero-order reaction
What is non-linear growth ?
Geometric progression
Constant ratio
Increasing difference
Increasing rate
“exponential growth”
A first-order process
Rate= k x c
What is really k ?
growth curves are smooth
rate is constantly increasing
How does C depends on t ?
c=2^t
How does c depend on doubling time ?
c=2t/2
c=2t/t2
doubling time=t2 so time taken for c to increase by factor of 2
How does c depend on exponential base ?
doubling time is intuitive-but not always the natural choice
we cant choose a different base for each process
