Kinetics Flashcards
What is the rate of reaction
The change of concentration of a reactant or product with respect to time
What is the order of reaction with respect to a reactant
The power to which the reactant is raised to in the rate equation
What is the overall order of reaction
The sun of the powers to which the concentration terms are raised to in the rate equation
What is the rate constant
The proportionality constant which links the rate of the reaction to the concentrations in the rate equation
What is the rate determining step
The slowest step in the mechanism of a reaction
What can increase the rate of a reaction
Increase temp = Increase rate
Increase surface area = Increase rate (solid)
Increase concentration = Increase rate (liquid)
Increase pressure = Increase rate (gases)
Introduce catalyst = Increase rate
What is a homogeneous catalyst
Catalyst in the same physical state as reactants
What is a heterogenous catalyst
Reactants and catalyst in different physical state
What are the four experimental methods for determining rate
Titration
Colorimeter
Gas volume
Conductivity
What allows for titration to be used to find rate
If one of the reactants is I2, Fe2+,H2O2 or an acid/base
How would you preform a titration to find the rate
A sample would be taken at set time intervals and the reactions stopped by quenching and then the sample would be titrated with a suitable standard solution and indicator.
Then a concentration against time graph would be plotted and a tangent drawn
