Kinetics Flashcards
What is kinetics?
The study of the speed or rate at which chemical reactions occur.
What affects the speed of a chemical reaction?
- Temperature.
- Pressure.
- Concentration.
- Particle Size.
- Catalyst.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that increases the rate of reaction without being consumer in the reaction. It works by providing an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy.
How does a higher temperature increase rate of reaction?
Particles have more kinetic energy so they move faster therefore collide more often and with greater energy. The particles are more likely to have activation energy, so more successful collisions.
How does a higher concentration increase rate of reaction?
There is a higher likelihood molecules will collide so rate of reaction increases.
How do you calculate rate of reaction?
change in concentration of reactant or product/time for the change to take place
What does inert mean?
Unreactive.
How many particles have zero energy?
0
What does the area under the curve of a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution show?
The total number of particles.
