Kinetic Theory Flashcards
1
Q
What does the kinetic theory?
A
Explains the different states of matter.
2
Q
What are the three states of matter?
A
Solids, liquids and gas.
3
Q
State the properties of solids.
A
- Strong forces of attraction hold the particles close together in fixed, regular arrangement.
- The particles don’t have much energy so they can only vibrate about their fixed positions.
4
Q
State the properties of liquids.
A
- Weaker forces of attraction between the particles
- Particles are closer together, but can move past each other - irregular.
- More energy than the particles in solids.
- They move in random directions at low speeds.
5
Q
State the propeties of gasses.
A
- Almost no force of attraction between the particles.
- Particles have more energy than those in solids and liquids.
- Free to move, and travel in random directions and at high speed.
6
Q
What happens when you heat a particle?
A
You give its particles more kinetic energy (KE) – they virbate. This is what causes solids to melt and liquids to boil.
