Kinetic Energy Flashcards
What is kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy is the energy stored in moving objects. Stationary objects have no kinetic energy
A car with a mass of 700kg is moving with a speed of 20 m / s. Calculate the kinetic energy of the car.
Equation: 0.5 x m x v^2
0.5 x 700 x 20^2 = 140,000 J
140 kJ
A tennis ball is travelling at 50 m / s and has a kinetic energy of 75J. Calculate the mass of the tennis ball.
Equation: 0.5 x m x v^2
75J = 0.5 x m x 50^2
75J = 1250 x m
m = 0.06 kg
What is elastic potential energy?
Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in a stretched spring.
What is thermal energy?
Thermal energy is is the energy stored due to an objects temperature. For example friction.
What is meant to by gravitational potential energy?
Gravitational potential energy is the energy stored in an object due to its position above the ground.
What is specific heat capacity?
The specific heat capacity of a substance is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1 degree.
What does the law of conservation of energy state?
The law of conservation of energy states energy can be transferred usefully, stored or dissipated but it cannot be created or destroyed.
What is work done?
Work done is whenever energy is transferred from one store to another.
Wat is the equation for work done?
Work done (J) = Force (N) x Distance (M)
What is meant by power?
Power is the rate at which energy is transferred or the rate at which work is done.
