Kinetic and potential energy stores Flashcards
How do you calculated kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy = 1/2 x mass x velocity^2
When is energy transferred to an objects kinetic energy store?
Anything that is moving has energy in its kinetic energy store. Energy is transferred to this store when an object speeds up and transferred away when it slows down.
Which factors effect the energy in an objects kinetic energy store?
The energy in an objects kinetic energy store depends on the objects mass and speed. The greater the mass and speed the more kinetic energy in the store.
What is the formula to calculate gravitational potential energy (GPE)?
Gravitational potential energy = mass x gravitational field strength x height
What is the gravitational field strength on earth?
9.8 newtons/ kilogram
What causes transfer of energy to the gravitational potential energy store?
Lifting an object in a gravitational field requires work and causes energy to be transferred to the GPE store.
Which factors effect the amount of energy in a GPE store?
The amount of energy depends on an objects mass, its height and the strength of the gravitational field an object is in.
When an object falls what is its GPE transferred into?
Kinetic energy
What would happen to energy transferred in a falling object if there was no air resistance?
Energy lost from the GPE store = energy gained in the kinetic energy store
In real life air resistance acts against all falling abject what does this do to the energy transferred?
Not all GPE will be converted into kinetic energy some will be converted into other energy stores eg thermal.
What is the formula for elastic potential energy?
Elastic potential energy = 1/2 x spring constant x extension^2
What is the limit of proportionality?
The limit of proportionality is the point when Hookes law is no longer true. The stretched material will no longer return to its original length when forces are removed.
What transfers energy to the elastic potential energy store?
Stretching or squashing an object.
