Kinesiology Exam #1 Flashcards
Protraction (joint movement)
anterior movement
Elevation (joint movement)
superior direction
Depression (joint movement)
inferior direction
Retraction (joint movement)
posterior movement
Functions of the skeleton
- protection
- allows movement
- blood cell manufacture
- calcium storage
- supports and shapes body
Types of fibrous joints
Synarthrosis, Syndesmosis, Gomphosis
Synarthrosis
bones interlock, essentially no motion, provides strength, stability and shape. e.g. skull sutures
Syndesmosis
broad areas of ligaments and interosseous membranes hold the joint together allowing small amount of twisting or stretching
e.g. tibiofibular joint at ankle
Gomphosis
bolted together. e.g. teeth
Joint congruency
Joint surfaces are in maximum contact with each other. Close packed or open packed
Goniometry Contraindications
Dislocation/subluxation of joint
Unstable fracture of bone
Rupture of tendon or ligament
Immediately post–op if movement will interfere with healing
Myositis ossificans/ectopic ossification
