Kinematics and Quantities Flashcards
What is a scalar?
A quantity which only has magnitude
What is a vector?
A quantity with both magnitude and direction
Examples of scalars
Time, length/distance, speed, temperature, mass and volume
Examples of vectors
Displacement, velocity, acceleration, weight and force.
How do you find the resultant vector?
Using the head to tail method or the tail to tail method
Define distance
The length of a path travelled from the starting point to the end point.
Define displacement
A measure of the straight line distance moved in a specific direction due to change in position.
Define speed
The rate of change of distance.
The formula for speed
Distance/Time
Define velocity
Displacement per unit time
Define acceleration
The rate of change in velocity
Define acceleration
The rate of change in velocity
How do you find acceleration?
(v-u)/time
S.I unit of acceleration
m/s2
What does the gradient of a distance-time graph refer to?
The rate of change of speed.
