kinematics Flashcards
1
Q
Distance
A
- The total length covered by a moving object regardless of the direction of motion
- SI unit: metre (m)
2
Q
Displacement
A
- The distance measured in a straight line from a fixed reference point
- SI unit: metre (m)
3
Q
Speed
A
- The distance travelled per unit time
- formula: speed= distance travelled / time taken
- SI unit: metre per second (m s-1)
4
Q
Velocity
A
- The rate of change in displacement
- formula: velocity= displacement / time taken
- SI unit: metre per second (m s-1)
5
Q
Instantaneous speed
A
- the speed of an object at a particular instant
- formula: average velocity = total displacement / total time taken
- SI unit: metre per second (m s-1)
6
Q
Acceleration
A
- The rate of change of velocity
- formula: acceleration= change of velocity / time taken
- SI unit: metre per second per second (m s-2)
- an object accelerates when there is a change in speed, direction or both
7
Q
Relationship between velocity and acceleration
A
- if an object is moving with increasing velocity, it is accelerating
- if an object is moving with decreasing velocity, it is decelerating
- uniform acceleration is a constant rate of change of velocity. This means the change in the velocity of the object per unit time is the same
- non-uniform acceleration is when the change in the velocity of the object per unit of time is not the same as
