Kinematics Flashcards
Kinematics
The study of motion
Motion
a change in an object’s location as measured by a particular observer
Distance (d)
This is the total length of the path travelled by an object in motion
Direction
The line an object moves along from a particular starting point
Vector
quantity that has magnitude (size) and direction (5m W)
scalar
quantity that is only magnitude (size) (5m)
Displacement (Δ⇀d)
change in position of an object
d&d
Position (⇀d)
The distance and direction of an object from a particular reference point
Acceleration (⇀a)
the rate of change of velocity.
total (equation)
average speed
The average speed of a moving object is the total distance traveled divided by the total time taken.
Vavg = total d / total t
change in (equation)
Average velocity
average Velocity is the total displacement (change in position) divided by the total time for that displacement
Vavg = Δd / Δt
5 formulas
V2 = v1 + aΔt no Δd
v2^2 = v1^2 + 2aΔd no Δt
Δd = v1Δt + aΔt^2/2 no v2
Δd = v2Δt - aΔt^2/2 no v1
Δd = (v2 + v1 / 2)Δt no a
Acceleration due to gravity
The acceleration that occurs when an object is allowed to fall freely
symbol - a/g
9.8m/s^2
Free Fall
Free fall is the acceleration due to gravity in the absence of air resistance
Everything falls at the same rate
Uniform Vertical Acceleration
Objects that move in the vertical direction (up and down; the y-axis; etc) experience acceleration due to gravity (g)
