Kinematics Flashcards
What is are the four types of motion?
Linear/Translational Motion: this is the movement of a body along a straight path.
Rotational Motion: this is the the movement of a body about a fixed point.
Oscillatory Motion: this is the to and fro movement of a body in a steady, uninterrupted manner.
Random Motion: this involves a constant change in the direction of a body.
What can be said about motion in one dimension?
A body is said to be moving in one dimension if it traverses a straight line along one of the following axis: x, y, and z.
What is the position of an object?
The position of an object is the location of said object.
What is distance?
Distance is the length of the path of an object.
What is displacement?
Displacement is the length of the path an object takes, as well as its direction from its starting point.
It is also called distance in a specific direction.
What is speed?
Speed is the distance covered by an object per time.
What are the two forms of speed a particle/object can have.
Instantaneous speed and Average.
Instantaneous speed is the limit of average speed as time tends to 0.
Average speed is the mean of an object’s total speed.
What is velocity?
Velocity is the displacement an object undergoes per time. So, it is the change in an object’s position per time, NOT change in displacement per time.
What is acceleration?
Acceleration is the change in velocity per time.
What are the two types of acceleration a body can undergo?
Instantaneous acceleration: the limit of the average acceleration as the time interval changes to zero.
Average acceleration:
