KINEMATICS Flashcards
Mechanics
Is a branch of physics concerned with how forces affect the motion of objects and its deformation.
Kinematics
It is a branch of mechanics that deals with the geometry and time-dependent aspects of motion without considering the forces causing the motion.
Vector
It is any quantity that is defined by its magnitude and direction.
Scalar
It is any quantity that is defined only by its magnitude.
Position
It is a vector that starts at the origin of the reference frame and points to the object of study.
Path length
It the distance travelled by a moving object.
Displacement
It is the change in position of a body between two points in time, it is a vector that starts in the initial position of the object and points to the final position.
Velocity
It is a vector quantity that indicates the time rate of change in position.
Speed
It is a scalar quantity that indicates the ration between the distance travelled and the time.
Acceleration
It is a vector quantity that indicates the time rate of change in velocity.
Translation
It is a type of motion in which all the parts of a rigid body move parallel to and in the same direction as the rest of the body.
Rotation
It is a type of motion in which a rigid body moves in a circular path around an axis of rotation, as a result, all points in the body simultaneously rotate in he same angular direction across the same number of degrees.
Axis of rotation
It is an imaginary line about which all the parts of a body move in circle during rotation.
Active movement
It is a movement caused by stimulated muscle.
Passive movement
It is a movement caused by sources other than active muscle contraction.
