Kinematics 1 Flashcards
Define distance (3)
-scalar quantity
-measurement of the physical separation between 2 points
-SI unit = Metres
Define displacement (2)
-vector quantity
-the distance of an object from a fixed point in a specified direction
What does scalar quantity mean (1)
-quantity that only has magnitude
What does vector quantity mean (1)
-quantity with both magnitude and direction
Define speed and state its formula (3)
-total distance travelled per unit time
- distance/time
-SI unit = m/s
Define average speed (3)
-the total time travelled divided by the total time taken
-at any moment in time the actual speed is not necessarily equal to the average speed
Total distance / total time
Define instantaneous speed (2)
-actual speed occurring at one instant in time
SI unit = m/s
State the conversion from m/s to km/hr and vice versa (2)
M/s to km/hr x3.6
Otherwise divide
State the conversion from m/s to mph and vice versa (2)
M/s to mph x2.24
Otherwise divide by 2.24
Define velocity (2)
-the rate of change in displacement of an object
V = DISPLACEMENT / TIME
When a runner runs a 200mtr race the speed may be constant but what happens to velocity (3)
-speed may be constant but the direction changes
-the direction of the velocity arrow changes
-hence velocity isn’t constant
Define acceleration (4)
-vector quantity
-rate of change in velocity
-SI unit = m/s2
V-U/t
What would the gradient of a distance time graph be (1)
Velocity
What would the gradient of varying velocity graph be (1)
-gradient of tangent would be the instantaneous velocity
How to find average velocity from the varying velocity graph (1)
-gradient betwen 2 points
Example: t1 and t2
