Kinematic waves Flashcards
What is Overland Flow
During storm events, rain travels over the ground, first in sheets, then in
small rills, eventually concentrating in larger gullies and channels.
From a management perspective, weβd like to know what volume of
runoff we need to deal with, and when weβre likely to see it.
Approach:
- Mathematically describe the flow of water over land.
- Simplify the equations for quantities of interest.
- Develop practical methods for predicting run-off from different sized
storms on different terrain, e.g., the Rational Method.
Where does the Rational Method come from?
The kinematic
wave equation.
What is C in:
ππ = πΆπA
Loss coefficient
What is the Kinematic Equation?
The kinematic wave equation is a general expression. It describes
transport of water
