Intercultural Praxis
process of critical analysis, reflection, and action for effective intercultural communication in the context of globalization. There are 6 ports if entry: Inquiry, framing, positioning, dialogue, reflection, and action.
Three definitions of culture
As a shared meaning: anthropological definition. Meaning are shared through symbols from generation to generation and allow us to make sense of, giving meaning to, and express our lives
As a contested meaning: cultural studies definition. Culture is an apparatus of power under a larger system of domination where meanings are constantly negotiated.
As a resource: Culture is a resource for political development, economic growth, and exploitation, ad well as collective and individual empowerment, agency, and resistance
Framing
Port of entry into intercultural Praxis in which you choose to frame a situation for a micro, macro, or meso level.
Hegemony
Domination through consent, in which the attitudes and ideas of the ruling class are so embedded and normalized in the mainstream culture that people accept their own domination, subordination, and exploitation.
World Trade Organization
International organization established in 1995 as a successor to the post-WWII “General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade” (GATT) which deals with trade rules between nations.
Historical legacy of colonization
Processes of globalization that are shaped by the historical legacy or colonialism and unequal power distinction between colonizers and the colonized
International Monetary Fund
Organization founded immediately after WWII to maintain global economic stability
First, second, and third world countries
First world: historically capitalist and wealthy countries, such as the US and it’s allies.
Second world: historically used to describe communists who opposed the first world, such as the Soviet Union and it’s allies.
Third world: historically used to describe neutral, developing countries, many of which had beem formerly colonized
World Bank
Institution founded after WWII to address poverty thriugh development and education
Global south/north
Term used to describe wealthy, developed, colonial powers being in the northern land on earth and poor, undeveloped, colonized countries in the south
Earth democracy
Democracy grounded in needs of people and a sustainable lifestyle, as opposed to exploitation of resources for maximum profit
De/Reterritorialization of culture
De refers to severance of cultural, social, and political practices from their places of origin. Re refers to putting them back.
Remittance
Financial support earned in one place and sent back to another
Diasporic communities
People that have been ousted from their former homes and long for a return there, like the Cherokee or Syrians
Body politics
Practices and policies through which power is marked, regulated, and negotiated on and through the body
