Increasing demand for water
•uks population is growing
in 2008 it was 61.4 million expected to increase to 10 million by 2033
•housing - more people means more housing increasing demands for water
•industry - building industry and agriculture
•climate - drought and water shortages are becoming more common (south of U.K.)

water transfer
a project which transfers water from one location to another, either to maintain river levels or to be extracted and transferred for household or industrial use.
why was kielder water built
it was expected that the population of the north east would rise as a results of growing steel and chemical industries. however they declined
social ad / disad
- forest park surrounding kielder water is harvested for timber and employs about 200 people
- only a few families had to be moved and re-housed when the reservoir was built
environmental ad / disad
- one and a half million trees were cut down to build the reservoir
- water is used to generate hydroelectric power at kielder dam
- the release of clean water into the Tyne river has encouraged salmon and sea trout to migrate up river to breed
economic ad/ disad
- has become a major tourist attraction which has created jobs and benefitted the local economy
- employs 200 people
how can water supplies be made more sustainable
- make all new homes efficient
- share water resources where there is a surplus
- reduce water leakages from pipes etc
- charge more for water to encourage people to use less
- make appliances more efficient
