Kiehl // Jason Blair Flashcards
Instrument Certification requirements
50hrs XC PIC
40hrs actual or simulated IFR (15 minimum with CFII)
(^3hrs of the 15 in the past 2 months before the test)
250NM XC with CFII on a filed IFR flight plan along airways OR via ATC routing, and 3 different types of approaches
Recency of flight experience requirements to be PIC under IFR
6 approaches in the previous 6 months
Holding, intercepting, & tracking courses
Biannual flight review
Current medical
(For pax) 3 takeoffs and landings within the preceding 90 days
How can you file an IFR flight plan
ForeFlight
Call FSS
Local/pop up IFR
1-800-WX brief website
When must you list an alternate
When weather conditions 1hr before to 1hr after ETA to your airport of intended use are less than 2000’ ceilings and 3SM visibility
When your airport of intended use does not have an IAP
What are standard alternate minimums
600’ ceilings & 2SM visibility for precision approaches
800’ ceilings & 2SM visibility for non precision approaches
If airport does not have an IAP, must be able to defend from the MEA under basic VFR
If filing to an airport with only RNAV approaches, alternate may also only have RNAV approaches ONLY IF you have WAAS
What occurs with a low temp/dp spread
Fog
How can you receive updated weather in the air
Listen to local ATIS
FSS
Thunderstorms - ATC
How could you determine where icing could be occurring
PIEREPs
AIRMET Z
Forecast icing chart (aviation weather)
Icing freezing level chart (aviation weather)
Cloud bases/tops
Air temp (winds aloft table)
Precipitation (location/type)
What deicing equipment do we we have on our plane
Pitot heat, defroster
What are the IFR fuel requirements
Complete the flight to the first airport of intended landing, then fly from that airport to the alternate airport and after that for 45 minutes at normal cruising speed
Pilots may omit the requirement to carry enough fuel to fly from an alternate airport if there’s an IAP at the first airport of intended landing, and for at least 1hr before & 1hr after the ETA, 2,000’ ceiling and 3SM visibility
Required IFR equipment
Generator
Radios
Altimeter (with Coleman window)
Ball (slip/skid)
Clock (panel mounted)
Attitude indicator
Rate of turn indicator
Directional gyro
What you would have to doing a piece of equipment failed (on ground)
Have a mechanic label it INOP and deactivate it
Do you need 2 radios to fly in IFR
No
Do you need pitot heat to fly
No, but depending on the weather it’s not a good idea to go without it
—> Go through MEL, TCDS, KOEL (kinds of operational equipment list), POH (comprehensive equipment list), 91.205
Going from one VOR to another with no radial in between them, would you get reception
If the total distance between them is less than 80mi, yes
